Giant sammich weekend

The boy was away. Here was my chance to eat giant meaty sandwiches sans onlookers.

Mile End
First things first. The staff were so friendly. I wanted to cuddle the guy who handed me my sandwich. I’m not sure if that’s because he was handing me food or because he looked like a big grinning teddy bear. I got the roast beef = sliced tender wagyu, onions and a nice hit of horseradish. It was big, juicy and so, so wrong (and by wrong I mean right). Whatever, just go there and eat a sammich. Give grinning bear a little hug from me.

53 Bond Street NoHo NY 10012: http://www.mileenddeli.com/locations-menus/noho/

Joe Dough
Made to order and (usually) with a smile. Some days I walk in here and the staff are beaming and bouncing off the walls. Other days it’s like walking into a funeral home. While they need to sort that shit out, Joe Dough is saved by the sandwiches. Go the Stoner’s Delight for a twist on the trad grilled cheese or get ready to unhinge your jaw for the triple- decker chicken and avo  challah club.

Parm
Be prepared to wait. You will wait whether you order takeaway or take a table. But it’s worth it. Parm serves lots of things but I go for the Chicken Parm roll (or hero if I’m feeling ambitious/gluttonous) Chicken, cheese, sauce – nom nom nom. Best eaten in the privacy of your own home coz it ain’t gonna be pretty.

Zen
For sushi to go. The girls that work here always seem to be having boyfriend dramas. Actually I have no idea what they are talking about as they are speaking in Japanese, but based upon the facial expressions and body language, they are complaining about boys. Or maybe they are just sick of the sight of another bloody customer. Who knows and who cares. The sushi and sashimi here are good value and good eating. The tempura anything is a bit dodge – more beer battered fish & chips than light and fluffy – but the shumai and dumplings are also pretty damn good.

Swift
Warm, cosy bar with a nice selection of beers and wines. They also have a few Aussie gems on offer – Cooper ‘s Pale Ale and a Tamburlaine red. Highly recommended.

Aaheli

New York excels at a lot of things. Curry is not one of them. I’m sure there are a number of delicious curry houses in this town but so far I haven’t been able to find one. Until now. Aaheli was recommended by a Brit – which says a lot. The Brits know a good curry when they eat one. I ventured here on a Friday night with a  bunch of girls and way to many bottles of vino (it’s BYO! Huzzah!) Sadly there was not a New Yorker amongst us –  just me, a fellow Aussie, two Poms and a Scot. I cannot remember exactly what we ordered but we took the waiter up on a few suggestions including a lamb cutlet dish. He also recommended we try a special rice in lieu of the normal steamed (it was fresh with a hint of coconut). He also recommended that we cover our shoulders, so don’t forget to bring a scarf or a cardie as a cover-up. The curries were good – complex, varied and a few with a nice hit of heat. Kudos to the heavily pregnant woman  at the table next to ours who copped a faceful of prosecco when our bottle exploded. She handled it with good humour and asked us to do it again but aim for her mouth (she hasn’t had a drink in 8 months and was happy to take whatever she could get!)

Le Pain Quotidien

I went into the Bleecker Street storefront to check out the baking classes. I’ve decided to take one, but also walked away with a large chocolate brownie. I ate it in the privacy of my own kitchen and I’m glad I did because it was obscenely good and I was able to a) scoff that thing like the piglet I am b) loudly proclaim my love  and scream ” you delicious m$#^&rf*@ker” at will.

THE REVISITS

Mud – for a vino
Tarralucci e Vino – for a tasty cap http://taralluccievino.net/the-caf/
Phebe’s – for half prices apps and some NZ sauv blanc http://www.phebesnyc.com/
Gregory’s – for pre-work caffeine fix. I go to the  one on West 44th. http://gregoryscoffee.com/find-a-shop/
Ogawa – for  salmon bento: 36 East 4th  NYC near Bowery.
Jebon – I returned, again, for the Alaska rolls  http://www.jebonusa.com/
Mogador – standard breakkie, or breakkie with a twist? I go to the one in the East Village http://www.cafemogador.com/

The Grand Sichuan

sichuan
As usual we completely over-ordered. Which means we over-ate and left with a doggy bag. Which is ok with me!
We had wine, a few beers, the steamed crystal shrimp dumplings and pork dumplings, chicken fried rice, prawns in garlic sauce and the dish of the night –  Spicy Empress chicken. The pork dumplings arrived looking a little thick skinned but the dough was perfect. A little satisfying chew, but no claggy.
The Empress chicken arrived laced with dangerous looking chillies but was a perfect combo of hot, sour, nutty and crispy. Yu-uuum.
Already dreaming about the next visit.

19 – 23 St Marks Place East Village NYC
There are several other locations.

This week’s eats…

eggs-benedict-a

V Bar – Went here for brunch. Boy had a sambo and I had an Eggs Florentine. Affordable, nice surroundings and good coffee.
132 1st Ave @ St Marks NYC East Village There’s one on Sullivan in the West Village too http://www.vbar.net/

Jebon – A big plate full of sushi and a glass of vino will only set you back about $20 including tip. Try the Alaska Roll or the spicy salmon. They also do Japanese style sliders. This technically should be on my revisit list as I’ve gone back to Jebon again and again.
15 St Marks Place bet. 2nd and 3rd NYC East Village http://www.jebonus.com/

Ogawa – uber-budget friendly and tasty bento box specials. I had the teriyaki salmon bento to take away. It was huge and delicious.
36 East 4th Street NYC bet. Bowery and Lafayette

Sushi Park – This place is always packed. Probably due to the eternal 50 per cent sushi roll special. The beers are cheap and the sushi rolls are delish. I had the salmon rolls and the Volcano Roll. Read the terms and conditions before ordering, they are reasonable and easy to adhere to, but just do it. Service can be patchy but suck it up because they are seriously busy. All the time.
121 2nd Ave bet E7th and St Marks NYC

Phebe's Tavern & Grill

Phebe’s Tavern & Grill

Phebe’s Tavern
– Monday and Wednesday. Order a pitcher of beer and hot wings are 10 cents each. They also mark down all their appetizers to half price during happy hour(s) – generally daily 4pm to 8pm. So you can basically eat yourself stupid for less than a tenner. Friendly staff and decent wines too.
359 Bowery @ East 4th http://www.phebesnyc.com/

Cowgirl Seahorse – Sorry, but meh. This place is still recovering from Sandy so will not judge too harshly. It’s supercute but the meals were a deep-fried mess. Tasted ok at the time but had that weird old cooking oil mouthfeel for hours after. I had the oyster po boy.
259 Front Street @ Dover NYC (Under the Brooklyn Bridge) http://www.cowgirlseahorse.com/

Moustache – We went to the one in the West Village. We are kebab bandits in Sydney. Love ’em. There’s basically a kebab shop on every corner and we’ve been missing them. Boy had the lamb shisha sandwich and I had the felafel sambo. The lettuce and tomato were crisp and fresh and both choices were pretty amazing. The felafel was fresh and green and nutty, the pita was obviously made fresh, if not in house to order, and the tahini was sesame-nutty amazingness. Seriously good. And we’re happy to now know that there’s another Moustache just blocks from out apartment. YES!
Several locations but we went to : 90 Bedford St bet. Barrow and Grove West Village NYC  http://moustachepitza.com/

Baker Street – Went here to watch England Vs Scotland  6 Nations. I didn’t see any of the game. Let’s be honest, I don’t really care but had brunch ($15 for eggs benedict and two drinks) Had too many mimosas, then tequila and then… ?
1152 1st Ave at 63rd Upper East Side NYC http://bakerstreetnyc.com/

Molly’s Cupcakes – Loved the bright yellow shop front and weird bondagey chain chair inside. Ordered a cookies and cream cupcake and a mint choc one. Both were pretty good, but especially enjoyed the mint choc.

JUST DRINKS

The Australian – I was Australia Day! Had to be done. Lot’s of Aussie beers and wines. Made me a bit homesick… 😦
20 West 38th St NYC Midtown http://www.theaustraliannyc.com/
Blue Haven – beer drinking and chicken wing chomping fest. Eased the  Australia Day homesickness a little
108 West Houston @ Thompson NYC Greenwich Village http://bluehavennyc.com/
Barramundi – weirdest vodka cranberry I’ve ever had, but nice vibe, cool booths and lots of awesome two-fer-one drink deals.

Australia Day in NYC. It made me a little homesick. Luckily my brother and my beautiful sister-in-law arranged for a care package to hit my doorstep the day before.
Needless to say, these Aussie goodies didn’t last long. all we have left are the Iced Vo-Vos. I worry if I eat them I will break down, cry and book a flight home.

I’m sure I’ll find more. Anyone know of a good coffee class? Any other beginners classes for wannabe crafty mixes?

Bareburger

At Bareburger the menus, tables, chairs, floors…everything is eco-friendly. They even save paper by taking your order on a device that kind of looks like an iphone (your waitress may LOOK like she’s frantically sexting, but she ain’t). The idea of sustainability extends to the food too of course. Here you can feast on elk and bison (but you can still have cow or chicken if you’d prefer). The setting is all very casual, but the space and service is nice and the burgers are yum.

There are lots of locations but I’ve only been to:

B Bar & Grill

New York is all about the dark and moody small bar. Well, in winter anyhoo. If that’s your thing, B Bar has a little cave-like corner just for you. Otherwise if you’d like some space and some people watching opps – grab a booth in the window… or pretty much any other table in the place. B Bar has a nice feel about it. The fact that most of the staff are gorgeous helps.
Today I sat in the window, watched people walking their dogs – and some poor suckers moving house (ever seen a teeny girl try and drag a treadmill up three flights of stairs? I have) I watched it all happen while I ate a short rib sandwich. It was a plate of meaty cheesy
goodness served with a side of crisp apple slaw. B Bar may just be my new favourite place!

Tuck Shop

Ah, I had such high hopes that this place would satisfy my craving for a traditional Aussie meat pie. Sadly, it wasn’t to be. The pie was sold to me by an Aussie and looked the way it should have but the meat inside was pale and dry and too finely ground. There was no gravy and for some reason it had a hint of curry flavour? I was so confused. And a little heartbroken. Basically it was a sausage roll in the shape of a pie. That said, I haven’t given up hope. They actually sell sausage rolls in the shape of sausage rolls,  so I’ll give one a go, and I’ve heard good things about the Sunday Roast. They also serve Coopers beer and Boags so I haven’t written them off just yet.  Sigh.

I went to the one at: 115 St Mark’s Place bet. Aves 1 and A
http://www.tuckshopnyc.com/

The Scratcher

A new apartment means a new local and The Scratcher is it. No frills, no fuss and it’s right downstairs. Lotsa beers and ciders and even a few wines. Free wifi, music on Sundays, friendly staff and daily happy hour from 4pm.

209 East 5th St NYC 10003
bet. 2nd and 3rd

REVISITED

Shervin’s Cafe – Coffee was good, icebreaker gamecards even better. Also overheard lots of conversations about rehab.. not sure if that’s good, bad or just interesting.

MUD Truck @ Astor Place – Coffee goodness as always. Except for that one time with the bad latte. http://www.onmud.com/
Ninth Street Espresso – I went to the one on 10th. They made me giddy with happiness as per usual. http://www.ninthstreetespresso.com/Ninth_Street_Espresso/Welcome.html
